FNA Biopsy Instruction and What to Expect

Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy
Patient Instructions & What to Expect
We want your thyroid biopsy experience to be as comfortable and safe as possible. Please read the following instructions carefully before your appointment.

Before Your Appointment

Blood Thinners:
If you are taking Warfarin (Coumadin), Aspirin, Plavix, Eliquis, Xarelto, or any other blood thinner, please let us know before your appointment. These medicines can increase the risk of bleeding.

Neck Area Preparation:

Avoid wearing makeup, creams, or powders on your neck.

Do not wear necklaces, chains, or scarves.

Avoid turtleneck or high-collar shirts. A loose, comfortable top is best.

What to Expect During the Procedure:

You will lie on your back with your neck gently extended.

The skin will be cleaned, and sometimes a small amount of local numbing medicine is applied.

Using ultrasound guidance, the doctor will insert a very thin needle into the thyroid nodule to collect cells.

Several samples may be taken, but the procedure usually takes about 15–30 minutes.

You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort, but it is generally well tolerated.

After the Procedure:

A small bandage may be placed on your neck.

You may have mild soreness or bruising at the biopsy site, which usually improves within a day or two.

You can return to normal activities the same day.

If you experience significant swelling, bleeding, difficulty breathing, or severe pain, contact us right away or go to the emergency room.
